arXiv implements strict ban on AI-generated submissions, imposing a one-year suspension for authors who submit inappropriate AI-produced content. The preprint server will also require peer review for all future publications from banned researchers. This response follows increasing incidents of AI "slop" infiltrating academic literature.

Thomas Dietterich, an Oregon State University professor and member of arXiv's editorial advisory council, announced the policy through social media. The move directly addresses concerns about unedited prompt responses, fake citations, and nonsensical diagrams that have slipped past editorial scrutiny in recent months.

The new policy stems from arXiv's existing moderation standards demanding "appropriate standards of scholarly communication." Authors who violate the AI content rules face permanent requirements for peer review before their work can appear on the platform.
