NASA's upcoming Artemis II mission will carry a collection of symbolic items in its Official Flight Kit (OFK), continuing a tradition dating back to the Apollo program. The kit, which includes over 2,300 items, is a duffel bag-sized pouch of mementos. These items are meant to commemorate the flight and the people behind it.

The OFK includes numerous flags, including US and "America 250" flags. A special American flag, flown on the first and last space shuttle missions, is also included. This flag previously returned to Earth with the first US commercial crew to launch to the International Space Station. A larger flag, prepared for a canceled Apollo mission, will also fly.

The mission, slated for early February, will take four astronauts on a 10-day flight around the Moon. This will be the furthest humans have traveled from Earth. The crew will witness the far side of the Moon.

This mission is a crucial step towards sustained lunar exploration. It also reflects NASA's commitment to honoring past achievements. The Artemis program aims to establish a long-term presence on the Moon and eventually, manned missions to Mars. The items carried on Artemis II represent a rich history of space exploration.
