Google is preparing a major AI overhaul for Android in 2026, with Gemini Intelligence at the center of the transformation. The company is revealing these features ahead of its I/O conference, promising enhanced automation and customization across the operating system. App automation will expand beyond initial tests with DoorDash and Uber, enabling complex multi-step tasks like extracting information from emails and populating shopping carts.

App automation will focus on select apps initially, primarily food delivery and ride-hailing services. Google has improved the system after initial frustrating experiences. The Gemini-powered Auto Browse feature will arrive on Android in June, using cloud-based models to handle web tasks. Autofill will also receive AI upgrades, potentially including license plate information, while voice input gets enhanced with Rambler to clean up rambling speech in real-time.

Android Auto is undergoing significant changes, with adaptive displays and video playback coming when parked. Android 17 will arrive in June with camera improvements, enhanced security requiring both PIN and biometric unlock for lost device protection, and a new location access option for session-based sharing. The operating system will evolve through Play Services updates rather than major OS changes.
