Amazon pours $5B more into Anthropic for AI chip deal

Amazon is doubling down on its AI ambitions with another massive investment in Anthropic. The company announced a $5 billion injection into the Claude developer, bringing its total commitment to $13 billion. Amazon could commit an additional $20 billion if the partnership hits certain commercial milestones.

The timing matters. Anthropic experienced a massive surge in paid subscriptions for Claude earlier this year, overwhelming its cloud infrastructure. The company publicly acknowledged the strain, admitting that "unprecedented consumer growth has impacted reliability and performance for free, Pro, Max, and Team users, especially during peak hours."

The new deal will provide relief. Anthropic expects "meaningful compute" within three months and nearly 1 gigawatt of additional capacity by the end of 2026, with the potential to eventually secure up to 5 gigawatts of Amazon's AI chips for training and running its models.
