Meta's data center in Newton County, Georgia consumes roughly 10 percent of the county's entire water supply, illustrating how concentrated AI infrastructure can strain local resources. While global water concerns about tech expansion may seem overblown, regional impacts tell a different story.

In northern Virginia's Potomac River Basin, data centers currently account for 8 percent of total water consumption—a figure that could surge to 29 percent by 2050. These facilities cluster in areas already facing water stress, with 40 percent of planned and existing US data centers located in regions the World Resources Institute classifies as having "high" or "extremely high" water scarcity.

Major tech companies are responding to these concerns with public water stewardship initiatives. Amazon reports running data centers hotter to reduce cooling water needs and has funded 50 projects expected to return more than 5.8 billion gallons annually to local communities. Google has outlined 165 water stewardship projects aiming to replenish over 19 billion gallons by 2030.

Despite alarmist narratives about AI draining global water supplies, the actual numbers show localized rather than worldwide catastrophe. The concentration of data centers in stressed regions demands better planning and transparency, but industry responses suggest voluntary measures may help mitigate environmental impacts.
