AcuRite Forces Customers to New App, Sparks User Backlash

AcuRite is mandating that all device owners switch to its new companion app by May 30, 2026, eliminating the long-standing My AcuRite application. The weather-monitoring company emailed customers last month about the transition, pushing users toward AcuRite Now, which launched in June 2025 for the Optimus weather station.

Long-time users have flooded online forums with complaints about the new app's limitations. Customers report difficulties renaming multiple temperature sensors, uploading data to weather sites, and the app's restriction to whole-number temperature readings. The company's support page acknowledges these gaps, promising future updates for sensor organization and a desktop version.

The transition also introduces a paywall for popular features. While My AcuRite allowed free data sharing with Weather Underground, AcuRite Now+ requires a $2 monthly subscription for this capability. The premium tier offers extended data storage—365 days versus the standard 30 days—but many users view the change as a downgrade disguised as improvement.

This forced migration reflects broader industry shifts toward subscription-based models and integrated IoT ecosystems. By partnering with Tuya's SmartLife platform, AcuRite aims to position its devices within a wider smart home ecosystem, though the execution has frustrated customers who preferred the simplicity of the original application.
