ACOG Issues Own Maternal Vaccine Plan, Cuts CDC Recommendations

American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists released its own maternal vaccination schedule, diverging from CDC guidance. The new plan, effective 2026, adds COVID‑19 and seasonal influenza shots that the current CDC list omits. President Camille Clare said confusion stems from shifting national recommendations and misinformation. ACOG aims to become the trusted source for expectant mothers in all care circles today.

Current CDC recommendations limit pregnancy shots to Tdap and RSV, but ACOG’s guide lists four: Tdap, RSV, influenza, and COVID‑19. It also charts extra vaccines for specific groups and outlines postpartum and breastfeeding options. Chief of Clinical Practice Christopher Zahn said immunizations are essential through pre‑pregnancy, prenatal, and post‑partum care, empowering OB‑GYNs to counter misinformation for every patient decision today.

ACOG’s move signals a broader push by medical societies to assert independent guidance amid political interference. With thirteen other groups already backing the schedule, the organization expects to improve vaccine confidence among pregnant patients. By clarifying which shots are safe and timely, ACOG provides clinicians a clear framework, potentially reducing missed opportunities for maternal immunization in clinical practice everywhere today.
