Doctors are urging people to get the flu vaccine by the end of February as the U.S. faces a potential 'quad-demic' with flu, COVID-19, RSV, and common colds circulating. Dr. Raj Dasgupta, chief medical advisor for Sleepopolis, emphasizes that the flu vaccine is crucial for reducing the risk of severe illness and hospitalization, especially for those over 50. This push comes as flu cases remain high, and cold and flu season extends into March.

The flu vaccine is available to everyone over 6 months old and is widely accessible at physicians' offices, pharmacies, and health clinics. Despite the ideal timing for flu shots being September to October, experts agree that February is not too late. Dr. Shasawat Kumar, a board-certified internist, explains that immunity takes two weeks to build, making a February shot effective against late-season viruses. The recommendation is part of a broader effort to protect vulnerable populations and reduce strain on healthcare systems.

In addition to the flu vaccine, doctors are encouraging people to stay updated with other vaccinations, such as COVID-19 boosters and the TDaP shot for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. Dr. Linda Yancey, an infectious disease expert, notes that protecting oneself also protects others, particularly infants. With the flu vaccine being just one part of a comprehensive health strategy, experts are urging individuals to prioritize vaccination as a key defense against winter illnesses.
