The Texas Rangers placed right-hander Cal Quantrill on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to right lat tightness. Quantrill exited Saturday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays after facing four batters and throwing 12 pitches. Manager Skip Schumaker said the team knew Quantrill's velocity was lower going into the game, though he showed no signs of pain when visited on the mound by Schumaker, pitching coach Jordan Tiegs, and head trainer Matt Lucero.

Quantrill, 31, has a 2.86 ERA in 32 games (15 starts) this season after signing a minor league deal. He boasts a 1.75 ERA over his past 11 appearances, second only to the New York Yankees' Cam Schlittler (1.64) among qualified pitchers. The Rangers recalled hard-throwing right-hander Winston Santos from Triple-A Round Rock for his third stint with the club.

Santos has 103 strikeouts in 83⅓ minor league innings this season. Additionally, right fielder Brandon Nimmo was scratched from Sunday's lineup due to illness.
