TV vs Monitor: Pros and Cons for Computer Use

Using a TV as a computer monitor offers larger screens at lower prices, but significant differences in design and performance exist. TVs are built for living room viewing distances, while monitors prioritize responsiveness and pixel density for close-up work and gaming.

Size and resolution are critical factors. A 32-inch 4K monitor delivers 137 PPI, whereas a 55-inch 4K TV only provides 80 PPI. Lower pixel density makes text and buttons appear blurry at close range. Monitors typically range from 24 to 32 inches, while TVs can exceed 75 inches.

Refresh rates and latency favor monitors. Most monitors and TVs default to 60Hz, but affordable monitors with 120Hz+ are easier to find. Monitor latency ranges from 1-4ms compared to 9-12ms on TVs, a crucial difference for competitive gaming. Low-latency TVs exist but cost significantly more.

Color space limitations affect older or cheaper TVs with HDMI 2.0, restricting 4K 120Hz to 8-bit color. HDMI 2.1 support is required for 10-bit color and Dynamic HDR, essential for photo and video editing. TVs still hold advantages for media consumption and certain gaming scenarios.
