BP said its interim chairman, Ian Tyler, would take on the role permanently, becoming the U.K. oil major’s third chair in less than a year following the removal of Albert Manifold in May. The appointment ends a three-month search amid management upheaval as BP seeks to return to its oil-and-gas roots after a push into renewables. Chief executive Meg O’Neill started in her role in April.

Tyler joined BP’s board as a nonexecutive director in April last year and was appointed interim chairman after Manifold’s exit. He is also chair of Grafton Group and senior independent director of Anglo American, and spent 17 years at Balfour Beatty, including eight as CEO. He plans to review his existing board commitments to focus on his new role.

BP has had three permanent CEOs since 2023. Manifold was ousted on May 26 over "serious concerns" about governance and conduct; he denied the allegations. The shake-up comes as BP, which recently reported a surge in profits, pursues a portfolio overhaul under O'Neill to boost returns.

Amanda Blanc, who led the chair search, said Tyler brings significant experience challenging and supporting executive teams. Tyler pledged to ensure the board has the capabilities to support BP’s strategic priorities. Blanc won’t stand for re-election at the 2027 AGM.
