Morgan Stanley Accidentally Leaks Asia Deal List

A Morgan Stanley staffer in the Asia-Pacific financial sponsors team accidentally leaked an internal document listing over 100 investment-banking deals the firm is pitching and monitoring across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The list, sent via email to clients by Mohamed Atmani, included IPO candidates from China, South Korea, and India, along with private equity and pension fund backers and paused projects. The banker intended to send a client-facing update but mistakenly attached the internal version containing price-sensitive information.

A blurred copy was also posted on Instagram. Morgan Stanley’s internal protocol requires a taped interview with the leaker to determine intent, timing, and recipients, while reviewing electronic records for patterns of error. If the leak was a genuine "fat finger" mistake with prompt admission, the outcome is typically a "letter of education" or "letter of caution".

Concealment or evidence destruction could trigger a disciplinary hearing and possible termination. The incident underscores how even rare errors in handling sensitive data can trigger serious internal investigations, though sympathy for the banker is limited given industry-wide awareness of such risks.
