Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has sat down with former Liverpool team-mate Jamie Carragher for a wide-ranging interview for Sky Sports' new 'Boss' YouTube series. The pair discussed his appointment at Stamford Bridge, his aims for the season, and their time playing together at Anfield.
Asked why he chose to join Chelsea, Alonso said the timing was right after his spell at Leverkusen and his time away from the game following Real Madrid. He said he had no previous link to the club, but saw potential that could be unlocked with some changes. He described the squad's strong base, supported by updates, improvements and new signings, as the foundation for a solid team, and stressed that the project would take several years, with the first year being important.
Alonso also addressed the club's ownership. He said getting to know the people involved, including their analysis and their ambitions for the club, was important, and that he expected to be part of key decisions alongside the ownership and sporting director. He added that he was not worried about Chelsea's managerial history, believing he and the club were on the same page. He acknowledged that results matter, but said having a clear plan and direction was equally important to him.
Looking ahead, Alonso said returning to the Premier League title race and the Champions League was the long-term ambition, given the club's past success. He cautioned, however, that this would take time and many right decisions, and that he did not expect it to happen immediately.
