World Matchplay 2026: Can Luke Littler Keep the Crown?

Phil Taylor ruled the Winter Gardens for nearly twenty years, winning 15 times between 1994 and 2014. His mastery turned defending the title into almost a foregone conclusion, and after his retirement the trophy was renamed in his honour. The atmosphere in Blackpool still feels his shadow.

Michael van Gerwen followed, securing back‑to‑back titles in 2015 and 2016, after beating James Wade and then Taylor himself. He entered the 2015 event carrying the World Grand Prix, European Championship, Masters and UK Open, and by 2016 he held a litany of titles, including the World Matchplay and Premier League.

Now the crown belongs to world No. 1 Luke Littler, who has already lifted two World Championships. He is chasing a historic defence that would cement his place alongside Taylor and van Gerwen. If he succeeds, he will add the Sid Waddell Trophy to his already impressive list; if not, his 2026 path may shift dramatically.

The 2026 Matchplay runs from Saturday 18 July to Sunday 26 July, with all nine days shown live on Sky Sports. A win could propel Littler into a Minehead defence and change the trajectory of his season, while also keeping the Winter Gardens tradition alive.
