Webb Confirms Sesko Handball But VAR Lacked Evidence

Howard Webb has confirmed what many Liverpool fans suspected - the ball did hit Benjamin Sesko's hand during Manchester United's 3-2 victory at Old Trafford. The Match Officials Mic'd Up host stated the footage "speaks for itself" and the ball "probably does hit the hand." However, VAR could not find the conclusive evidence needed to overturn the goal, which put United 2-0 up in the first half in a controversial incident.

The Laws of the Game require goals to be disallowed if the goalscorer uses any part of their hand, meaning VAR had no option but to investigate. Both the Video Assistant Referee and Assistant VAR said they could not reach certainty despite reviewing multiple angles. Webb explained that officials need absolute certainty to intervene, and in this case they simply couldn't find it. The on-field decision stood as a result.

Webb also addressed another contentious decision, admitting Everton should have been awarded a penalty against West Ham last month. He stated "the game expects a penalty" when players make deliberate arm movements, even without intent to handle. Meanwhile, referee Sam Barrott received praise for correctly overruling his assistant to spare Nick Pope a red card during Arsenal's win over Newcastle.
