Three‑time world darts champion Michael van Gerwen was punched in the face during a bar altercation in Den Bosch on the Netherlands’ King's Day. Video shows the 37‑year‑old chatting with a woman and a man before the stranger suddenly struck him. Security intervened as van Gerwen tried to chase the attacker, who later apologized on Instagram. The assault unfolded hours after the city’s street celebrations.

Van Gerwen told Dutch outlet Sportnieuws.nl the aggressor appeared heavily intoxicated and that the blow came “out of nowhere”. He said pursuing the man was an automatic reaction, though he later decided not to press charges. His representatives at MODUS Sports Management issued a statement insisting the champion did not provoke the incident and would not comment further. He hopes to put the incident behind him.

Despite the episode, van Gerwen returned to Premier League action in Aberdeen, where he fell 6‑4 to Luke Humphries in a quarter‑final. The loss dropped him down the table as the season heads toward the May 28 finals at The O2. His focus on the upcoming matches will be tested as rivals close the gap.
