Boxer Tarona Taafaki has won Tuvalu their first ever Commonwealth Games medal, taking bronze in the women's 75kg boxing division. The 20-year-old reached the semi-final via a bye, and due to Commonwealth Games rules ensuring each semi-finalist receives a bronze medal, she made history for her nation despite losing her bout to India's Lovlina Borgohain.

Her coach and father, Badi Taafaki, noted that for the people of Tuvalu, this medal means everything. As one of the smallest nations in the world, the achievement is a significant stepping stone. Training conditions are incredibly difficult; athletes often train on the island's airport runway because it is the most stable stretch of land amid the effects of climate change.

Badi Taafaki emphasized that winning medals helps the world recognize Tuvalu and the challenges they face, such as coastal erosion. For Tuvalu, the countdown to losing land to rising seas is measured in years, not decades.
