Thomas Tuchel has dealt a blow to Harry Maguire's World Cup chances, naming him at least fifth-choice center-back despite his strong performance against Uruguay. The England manager insisted Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, John Stones, and injured Trevoh Chalobah remain ahead of the Manchester United defender in the pecking order.

Maguire impressed in his first appearance under Tuchel, captaining the side in the second half of Friday's 1-1 draw with Uruguay. The German acknowledged his strengths, calling him "solid, solid central-defender play" who is "very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air" and valuable for set-pieces, but maintained his position hasn't changed.

John Stones, who has played just five times for Manchester City since November, remains Tuchel's "world class" favorite despite fitness concerns. The manager gave Stones "credit in the bank" for his "level of game understanding" and personality. Several key players including Aaron Ramsdale, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka are leaving the England camp before Tuesday's friendly against Japan.
