Thomas Tuchel has confirmed John Stones remains a key player for England's World Cup plans but emphasized the Manchester City defender must be fit to earn his place. Stones, with 87 caps, has featured just four times for Tuchel due to recurring injury problems, raising concerns about his availability for this summer's tournament.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Japan, Tuchel revealed Stones was forced out of the Uruguay match with a minor calf issue, describing the setback as 'not ideal.' The England manager stressed that while Stones has 'a lot of credit in the bank' and is 'a big part of my plans,' fitness remains non-negotiable. 'Like everyone he has to be fit,' Tuchel stated, contrasting his approach with comments about Harry Maguire, whom he suggested remains fifth in the centre-back pecking order.

Tuchel's injury concerns extend beyond Stones, with Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Adam Wharton all unavailable for the Japan game. The manager acknowledged the frustration of missing key players during this crucial March camp but accepted the reality of the season's demands. 'We want them to perform in their clubs but the reality is it's our last camp before we leave to America,' Tuchel explained, emphasizing the need to reconnect with team principles before the World Cup.
