Joel Tomkins has stepped down as head coach of Catalans Dragons after less than a year in the position, citing unforeseen "personal reasons" for his sudden exit. The former England international confirmed the decision following a challenging period, which involved extended time away from his family.

Tomkins initially assumed the interim role following Steve McNamara’s exit before being made permanent months later. His departure comes with the Dragons sitting sixth in the Super League standings after seven rounds. The club’s recent form dipped, winning just one of the last three matches Tomkins missed.

Ryan Sheridan, supported by assistants Micky McIlorum and Mitchell Pearce, assumes temporary control of the squad. Their immediate test arrives on April 18 against the league-leading Warrington Wolves. Tomkins expressed gratitude for his experience, stating he leaves the club a better coach than when he arrived.

This coaching change interrupts the season barely a quarter of the way through, placing immediate pressure on the interim staff to maintain the team's current standing. The club must regroup quickly before facing Warrington Wolves next.
