Szoboszlai-Haaland Clash: Ref Explains Controversial Red Card Decision

The controversial red card shown to Dominik Szoboszlai during Manchester City's win over Liverpool has been explained by Premier League officials. Referee Craig Pawson initially awarded Rayan Cherki's stoppage-time goal after Erling Haaland appeared to foul Szoboszlai, but VAR intervened to disallow the goal and send off the Liverpool midfielder.

PGMO Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb defended the decision on Sky Sports' Match Officials Mic'd Up, stating that while Szoboszlai committed the initial foul on Haaland, the goal only occurred because Haaland then fouled Szoboszlai, preventing him from clearing the ball. Webb emphasized that the advantage rule couldn't apply since Haaland's subsequent foul directly led to the goal.

Meanwhile, north London derby referee Peter Bankes stood by his decision to disallow Tottenham's equalizer against Arsenal, ruling that Randal Kolo Muani pushed Gabriel before scoring. Bankes maintained that two hands on Gabriel's back constituted a clear push, despite split opinions about the severity of the contact.
