Spurs probe retractable pitch over injury crisis after near-relegation

Spurs launched a major review of their injury crisis, with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium's retractable pitch under scrutiny. Performance director Dan Lewindon completed his three-month assessment after the club lost the most days to injury of any Premier League side, with players missing 370 games across all competitions.

The injury crisis nearly pushed Spurs into relegation. De Zerbi's side needed a final-day home win over Everton to stay up. Knee injuries to Kulusevski, Dragusin, Davies, and Odobert all struck at the stadium. Independent pitch testing remains inconclusive, though further analysis is planned against other Premier League surfaces.

Lewindon identified structural issues including poor communication and a lack of integration between medical and coaching staff. Spurs will now assign up to six physios to individual players and hire a psychologist for the men's team. Maddison, limited to three bench appearances late in the season, called the injury problems "astronomical" and demanded answers.

Real Madrid's retractable pitch is also in the spotlight after a spate of ACL injuries since the Bernabeu reopened. Reports claim Real is investigating pitches at both the Bernabeu and Valdebebas. Lewindon reportedly found no issue with the medical team's handling of Simons' ACL tear, which occurred after the midfielder was allowed back on the pitch.
