Southampton expelled from play‑offs, club calls sanction disproportionate

Southampton were expelled from the Championship play‑offs on Tuesday after the EFL confirmed a backroom staff member filmed Middlesbrough’s training ahead of the semi‑final. The club admitted multiple breaches of regulations 3.4 and 127, covering unauthorised recordings of Oxford, Ipswich and Middlesbrough. As a result, Middlesbrough have been reinstated and will face Hull at Wembley in the upcoming season final.

Chief executive Phil Parsons issued a statement admitting the wrongdoing but calling the sanction manifestly disproportionate. He pointed out that Leeds United received a £200,000 fine for a similar breach, whereas Southampton lost a chance at a £200m play‑off prize and a four-point deduction for 2026/27. An appeal will be heard Wednesday before an independent arbitration panel to review case.

The ruling reshapes the promotion picture, leaving Hull City to meet Middlesbrough for the final spot while Southampton supporters confront a season without playoff football. The club has pledged cooperation with the EFL on a working group for Regulation 127 enforcement, signalling a desire to reform practice. Regardless of the appeal’s outcome, the penalty stands as the harshest sporting sanction in recent English football history.
