Oscar Piastri has admitted that McLaren are not in the same dominant position they held 12 months ago heading into the 2026 Formula 1 season opener in Melbourne. The Australian driver, speaking on the eve of his home race, acknowledged that while his team remains competitive, they are not currently the strongest on the grid following pre-season testing in Bahrain.

McLaren's boss Andrea Stella has already suggested that Mercedes and Ferrari hold a performance advantage over his team and Red Bull in the new regulations era. The defending constructors' champions face a significant challenge as Formula 1 introduces its most substantial technical changes in years, with cars featuring a near 50-50 split between internal combustion and electrical power.

Despite the apparent step back, Piastri remains confident in McLaren's ability to recover quickly. The 23-year-old emphasized that the 24-race season provides ample opportunity for development and learning, particularly as teams adapt to the new power unit management requirements. He specifically noted that Albert Park's unique characteristics will present a 'complicated' challenge for the new cars, with different circuits demanding varied approaches to battery charge management throughout the season.
