McLaren driver Oscar Piastri suffered a pre-race crash during reconnaissance laps at the Australian Grand Prix after experiencing an unexpected power spike from his Mercedes engine. The incident occurred around 40 minutes before the scheduled start as Piastri navigated Turn 4, causing his MCL40 to spin and hit the wall, destroying the front-right suspension.

Fifth-place qualifier Piastri described feeling 'shocked and surprised' by how suddenly he lost control, with the crash happening 'before I'd even really had a chance to react.' The Australian driver emphasized that while cold tires and his own driving played a role, the 100kW extra power he received was a significant contributing factor. 'A scenario like that just shouldn't happen,' Piastri stated, expressing disappointment over the mechanical failure.

The crash drew comparisons to Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli's FP3 incident, raising questions about the 2026 F1 cars' aggressive torque delivery. Piastri noted that everything was working normally from a technical standpoint, making the failure particularly difficult to accept. 'It would almost be easier if we just said there's cold tyres and I was optimistic,' he explained, highlighting the frustration of dealing with unexpected engine behavior during critical moments.
