The PGA Tour is launching a two-tier system in 2028 featuring promotion and relegation between the Championship and Challenger Series. The top-level Championship Series will host 15 regular-season events plus majors with 23-24 tournaments annually, while the Challenger Series serves as the developmental pathway with concurrent events and $4m minimum purses.

Championship Series events will feature 120-player fields and $20m purses lifted from current Signature Events, running February through August. The Challenger Series offers 144-player fields across 20+ events, with top performers earning advancement. Players finishing outside the top 90 in Championship Series standings face relegation unless they succeed in a post-season last-chance qualifier.

Rory McIlroy called the restructuring a positive step for professional golf, emphasizing meritocracy's role in serving players and fans. Tiger Woods, who led the Future Competition Committee, described it as building the best version of the PGA Tour for future generations. The new format aims to create clearer stakes and more dramatic season conclusions that reward excellence.

The system promotes 20 players annually from Challenger to Championship Series while maintaining competitive integrity. Top Challenger performers can earn mid-season promotion through multiple event wins or major victories. This structure directly addresses fan demand for better players competing more frequently against each other.
