Italy is set to host a new ATP 250 grass-court tournament in Milan starting in 2028, serving as a Wimbledon tune-up event. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation purchased the rights to the Brussels tournament currently held in October, with plans to relocate it to northern Italy each June.

Milan's iconic San Siro stadium, home to AC Milan and Inter Milan, is expected to host the event with its capacity of over 75,000. Federation president Angelo Binaghi noted the Madrid Open's practice courts at Santiago Bernabeu as precedent for using football stadiums for tennis. The event adds to Italy's growing tennis portfolio, which already includes hosting the ATP Finals through 2030 and the Davis Cup Finals.

Italy previously hosted a WTA grass tournament in Gaiba from 2022-24, demonstrating the country's capability to stage grass-court events. The federation is also investing in infrastructure, with work beginning on a retractable roof for Campo Centrale at the Foro Italico ahead of the 2028 Rome Masters. Binaghi's vision extends to elevating the Rome tournament to a fifth Grand Slam, joining the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open.
