Rory McIlroy sits seven shots behind Patrick Reed at the halfway point of the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. The Northern Irishman shot a three-under 69, with six birdies and three bogeys, moving to two under overall. Reed leads at nine under after a flawless 66, with England's Andy Sullivan a single stroke back following a superb 65.

McIlroy, the defending champion seeking a fifth title here, improved on his opening 73 but still faces a significant deficit. He acknowledged tricky conditions, with firming greens and wind demanding selective aggression. Meanwhile, former leader Francesco Molinari is tied for third at seven under, and Tyrrell Hatton’s stunning eagle chip-in helped him to fifth place.

Saturday’s third round is critical for McIlroy’s comeback bid. He’s previously come from ten shots back to win this event, so a low round could vault him into contention. Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, will aim to protect his lead and secure his first DP World Tour victory since 2018.
