Rory McIlroy sits eight shots back after a one-over 73 at the Dubai Desert Classic. His round was derailed by a costly double-bogey at the 18th, where a poor wedge shot led to a water ball. The world number two is chasing a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai title this season.

Francesco Molinari, the 2018 Open champion, leads by two after a stunning seven-under 65. The Italian, now ranked 418th, reeled off seven birdies in eight holes. He's seeking his first professional win since 2017. Mikael Lindberg is in second place, with Joel Girrbach and JC Ritchie one shot further back.

Defending champion Tyrrell Hatton and Shane Lowry are on two under. Lowry rebounded from a costly final-hole double-bogey that cost him last week's Dubai Invitational. Tommy Fleetwood also struggled, matching McIlroy's 73. McIlroy, a four-time event winner, has work to do to contend this weekend.
