Mark Butcher was on the brink of quitting cricket before his legendary 173 against Australia in the 2001 Ashes. Amid personal struggles and poor form, Butcher admitted he had begun to 'hate' the game and was dropped after England's 1999-2000 tour of South Africa.

A Christmas phone call to his father in 2000 marked a turning point. Butcher spent over two months rebuilding his technique from scratch, changing his grip and stance. 'I was working on everything. I had come to the end of the road with it,' he recalled.

England captain Nasser Hussain initially planned to drop Butcher for the fourth Test at Headingley, but a last-minute change of heart proved pivotal. 'It was one of those sliding doors moments,' Hussain said.

At Headingley, facing a 315-run deficit, Butcher's unbeaten 173 sealed a remarkable six-wicket victory. His innings, featuring 23 fours and one six, remains tied with Sir Donald Bradman as the fourth-highest successful fourth-innings chase in Test history.

A memorable moment came when Shane Warne high-fived Butcher as he completed the chase. 'I'll never forget that. It was magic,' Butcher said. Hussain praised Butcher's composure: 'Don't complicate things, Nasser,' he reportedly said during the intense chase.
