Kalyn Ponga has been cleared to represent New Zealand at the 2026 Rugby League World Cup after the International Rugby League Board approved his eligibility switch from Australia. The 2023 Dally M Medallist, who plays for the Newcastle Knights, was born in Australia to New Zealander parents and has represented Queensland in State of Origin.

Recent changes to State of Origin eligibility rules enabled this switch, allowing players who qualify for NSW or Queensland to represent their heritage nations. Ponga's only appearances for Australia came in the Junior Kangaroos and Rugby League World 9s in 2019. His family connections to New Zealand run deep, with both parents and all four grandparents born in the country.

Ponga expressed pride in his Māori heritage and connection to New Zealand rugby league through his Māori All Stars appearances. IRL Chair Troy Grant welcomed the decision, emphasizing that international eligibility rules aim to ensure the best players represent nations they're eligible for. The switch strengthens New Zealand's prospects for the 2026 tournament while maintaining Ponga's ability to continue playing for Queensland.
