Joey Barton appeared via videolink from HMP Liverpool at Liverpool Crown Court, denying a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent after an alleged assault outside Huyton’s Fairway Golf Club on March 8. Barton, 43, was remanded in custody while his co‑defendant Gary O’Grady, 50, remained on conditional bail.

Earlier testimony revealed Barton and O’Grady had been drinking with Kevin Lynch, former non‑league manager and founder of NexGen Academy, before the incident. Lynch suffered a serious eye injury and is now the focus of the prosecution. Judge Andrew Menary KC set a seven‑day trial for September 1.

Barton’s career spanned clubs such as Manchester City, QPR, Newcastle, Rangers and Marseille, and he earned a single England cap. Off the pitch, he hosts the podcast Common Sense With Joey Barton, described as an “unfiltered” look at sport, society and politics. The case will test his future in public life for the season this week.

With the trial set for September, both parties face a seven‑day court battle that could end in a conviction or acquittal. The outcome will influence not only Barton’s legal standing but also his media brand and potential future roles in football commentary. The case highlights the intersection of sport, law and public perception in 2026.
