Joe Ward: Irish Boxer's Olympic Heartbreak to Pro Redemption

Joe Ward was the youngest Irish boxer to win European Championships gold in 2011, but Olympic dreams shattered twice. A contentious decision in Trabzon cost him London 2012 qualification, and baffling point deductions ended his Rio 2016 campaign prematurely. Despite three European titles and World medals, an Olympic medal eluded him.

Turning professional in 2019, Ward debuted at Madison Square Garden only for his knee to dislocate in round two. The freak injury sidelined him as opportunities dried up, yet he refused to quit. "I've been through it all and now I can fight through this," he says, crediting adversity for mental edge.

Now Ward faces undefeated Artjom Kasparian in Dublin live on Sky Sports. He views the step-up fight as proof that persistence pays: "Doors will open... I'm probably the best I've ever been physically, mentally."
