Mark Butcher has voiced strong criticism regarding the re-appointment of Joe Root as England's Test captain, labeling it a "retrograde step" for the team. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed Root's return to the captaincy, a position he relinquished in 2022, with Stephen Fleming also appointed as the new Test head coach.

Root, who has captained England a record 65 times, stepped down after a period where only one victory was secured in his final 17 matches. Following his departure, England adopted a more aggressive style under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, which initially brought success but ended with a less favorable record. Butcher highlighted that the Stokes-McCullum era was a direct response to the challenges faced during Root's initial captaincy.

The ECB's decision appears influenced by limited alternative options, particularly with Ben Stokes' retirement from international cricket. The timing of the announcement is also pressing, with England's Test series against Pakistan commencing on August 19. Butcher expressed concern that Root's return would negatively impact his batting form and hinder the team's potential for further progress. Meanwhile, Simon Doull praised Fleming's appointment, anticipating an effective partnership with Root.
