Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar is on course for men's tennis history after beating Arthur Filis 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 in the Canadian Open quarter-finals. He will move to at least 11th in the ATP rankings, having started the year in 165th. Jodar would smash Boris Becker's record of 210 days to go from breaking the top 100 to being in the top 10 in just 140 days.

He faces American Brandon Nakashima in the semi-finals on Wednesday night. Canadian Open champion Ben Shelton swept Jakub Mensik 6-3 6-1 in 72 minutes, but Jodar requires Shelton to lose to Learner Tien. If Jodar and Shelton meet in the final, a win would see him move into the top 10.

Jodar said, 'I had to give my best to win this match.' Meanwhile, Elena Rybakina rallied back to beat Naomi Osaka 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4, advancing to the WTA Canadian Open semi-finals. Rybakina could overtake Aryna Sabalenka as world No 1 later this month. She said, 'It was a really tough match but I'm glad I could turn it around.'.
