Rafael Jodar Emerges as New Spanish Tennis Sensation at French Open

PARIS -- Rafael Jodar heard the familiar chant of "Vamos, Rafa!" echoing through nearly full Court 7 on Wednesday, but the crowd wasn't calling for the retired legend. Instead, 1,500 fans including former world No. 3 David Ferrer packed the stands to witness the 19-year-old Spanish sensation, who delivered a thrilling 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-5 victory over James Duckworth after three hours and 22 minutes.

Jodar's meteoric rise has been stunning. After turning professional at season's start following a brief Virginia college stint, he's climbed from world No. 168 to No. 29. The teenager captured his first ATP title at Marrakesh's 250-level event and reached semifinals in Barcelona and quarterfinals in Madrid, where he defeated top-10 player Alex de Minaur and pushed world No. 1 Jannik Sinner to a tiebreak.

His Roland Garros debut was equally impressive. Jodar dropped just five games in his first-round win -- the fewest since Novak Djokovic in 2005 -- and became only the fourth Spanish teenager in 30 years to reach the third round, joining Nadal, Robredo, and Alcaraz. With a 17-3 tour record on clay, he ranks second-best in ATP debut on the surface behind Andy Roddick.

Jodar faces Alex Michelsen on Friday with a chance to reach the second week. While he acknowledges 2026 as a learning year, his rapid ascent suggests the teenager is already making his mark on the professional circuit.
