Moses Itauma set for WBO title shot after Franklin win

Moses Itauma is poised to become the WBO's mandatory heavyweight challenger after a dominant fifth-round stoppage of Jermaine Franklin in Manchester. The 21-year-old British prospect extended his undefeated record to 14-0 with 12 knockouts, earning a formal recommendation from WBO president Gustavo Olivieri for a title shot. This victory positions Itauma as one of boxing's most promising young heavyweights.

Itauma's mandatory position could create a training camp dilemma if stablemate Fabio Wardley defeats Daniel Dubois on May 9 to claim the WBO belt. Both fighters share trainer Ben Davison, and Itauma acknowledged the potential conflict, saying, "Everything can make sense, it all makes sense." Wardley, who was recently elevated to full champion after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the title, expressed similar sentiments about avoiding an early intra-gym clash.

While Itauma eyes the WBO belt, he remains realistic about facing elite champions like Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk. "Why would Usyk fight me?" Itauma questioned, acknowledging the Ukrainian's busy agenda and the financial incentives for Fury to pursue other matchups. For now, the young heavyweight appears content to target the WBO title, with Dubois or Wardley as his most likely first championship opportunity.
