Sheffield United's former women's captain, Sophie Barker, testified at an inquest that Maddy Cusack's mental health decline was primarily linked to her girlfriend's relocation. Barker stated that Cusack was "infatuated" with Grace Riglar and felt abandoned when Riglar moved for football, suggesting Cusack "would still be here" if Riglar had remained local.

The court heard family legal counsel suggest coach Jonathan Morgan's alleged behaviour and a lack of club support contributed to Cusack's struggles. However, Barker maintained Riglar's departure was the main factor. Cusack had previously expressed concerns about Morgan's professionalism based on past experiences, but reportedly avoided direct confrontation.

Barker described Cusack becoming "quieter" and "more reserved" in the months leading up to her death in September 2023. A former head physiotherapist also testified, noting Cusack's excessive emotional reaction to a minor issue, which she later recognized as a potential sign of distress. The inquest continues.
