The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced revamped structures for its two men's World Cup tournaments, introducing new 'Super Series' and 'Super 7' rounds at the 50‑over event. Approved at its annual board meetings in Edinburgh, the changes aim to raise competitiveness and consequence across the flagship global competitions.

The first change takes effect at the 2027 Cricket World Cup, co‑hosted by South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe in October–November. Fourteen teams will compete, but the three lowest‑ranked sides will enter a 'Super Series' round where only the top team advances to a new 12‑team group phase.

From the main groups, the top three teams plus the best‑placed team across both sides qualify for a 'Super 7' round. The top four from the Super 7s then progress to the semi‑finals, tightening the competition and creating high‑consequence matches at every stage.

Similarly, the 2028 T20 World Cup, co‑hosted by Australia and New Zealand, will see 20 nations from the start but expand the second stage to 10 teams, renamed 'Super 10'. New 'eliminators' pit second and third teams from opposite groups to decide the final‑four slots, boosting emerging nations' chances.
