Hussain slams Lord's pitch as substandard after 33 wickets fall

Former England captain Nasser Hussain blasted the surface at Lord's, calling it “substandard” after the venue produced 33 wickets in two days of the opening Test against New Zealand. England set New Zealand 218 to win at the end of day two, while New Zealand pacer Nathan Smith ripped through the hosts for six for 70 on a deceptive bounce.

England’s second innings crumbled quickly, losing four wickets in 11 balls as Emilio Gay, Harry Brook, Joe Root and Ben Stokes fell in rapid succession. The pitch, described by grounds staff as slow with variable seam movement, has been steamed at 200 °C and relaid outfield in an effort to revive it, yet CricViz rates its inconsistency at 7.5, the highest for an English Test.

Former New Zealand bowler Simon Doull echoed Hussain, urging the ECB and MCC to consider withdrawing future fixtures unless the wicket is overhauled. While Stuart Broad praised the spectacle, noting crowds enjoyed the unpredictable action, both sides agreed the surface hampers genuine Test batting. The ICC’s verdict on the pitch is due next week, and any sanctions will directly affect Lord’s hosting schedule.
