Edwards faces World Cup selection dilemma as England announce squad

England head coach Charlotte Edwards names her T20 World Cup squad on Tuesday with the home tournament bringing intense scrutiny. England have not lifted the T20 World Cup since hosting in 2009 and were knocked out in the group stage last year. They have not won an ICC trophy in any format since 2017, when they clinched the 50-over World Cup at home.

Edwards must balance youth and experience for a side described as underachieving despite being one of the best-resourced teams in women's cricket. Rising stars Davina Perrin and Tilly Corteen-Coleman lack international caps, and analyst Charles Dagnall believes the pressure of a home World Cup may be too much for untested players. "This is one of the best resourced and well-paid teams in world cricket, if not in women's sport. And they've only had one World Cup to show for it since 2009," he said.

Dagnall identifies seven "dead certs": Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Heather Knight, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Amy Jones, Charlie Dean, Sophie Ecclestone and Lauren Bell. He backs Tammy Beaumont as backup wicketkeeper over Kira Chathli for experience, and prefers Issy Wong to Lauren Filer for her all-round ability and big-game pedigree.
