Former West Ham United joint-chairman David Sullivan has resigned following the emergence of serious historic allegations, with both Essex Police and the Metropolitan Police now investigating claims made by seven women. The accusations, which Sullivan denies as entirely false, date back to the 1980s and 1990s when he owned tabloid newspapers. Police confirmed they have received contact and inquiries regarding the allegations, which reportedly involve predatory behavior toward young models.

Sullivan built his estimated £1.2bn fortune through pornographic magazines and sex shops before taking over West Ham in 2010 alongside David Gold, who passed away in 2023. The 77-year-old businessman claimed the allegations were sensationalized by media and that after meeting thousands of women in the adult industry, some improper conduct claims were inevitable. He stated stepping down was an incredibly painful decision made out of love and respect for the club.

The timing comes after West Ham's relegation from the Premier League following 14 years in the top flight, marking a difficult period for the club both on and off the pitch. Sullivan's departure creates uncertainty as the Hammers prepare for their first Championship campaign since 2012, with fans and stakeholders seeking stability after a tumultuous season.
