George Turner, co-founder of Carney's Community, says the boxing charity's partnership with the Wimbledon Foundation has placed 13 young people from Wandsworth into first-time jobs at the All England Club this year. The programme targets youths impacted by gun and knife crime, criminal records, and special educational needs — groups routinely rejected by other employers. Turner told Sky Sports that Wimbledon has accepted every referral, including those with criminal justice involvement, and that a reference from the championships often overrides barriers in future job searches.

Founded to honor legendary Fitzroy Lodge amateur coach Mick Carney, the charity uses boxing and mentoring to build discipline and emotional control. Turner emphasizes that the gym treats everyone equally regardless of background, teaching participants to manage aggression rather than be controlled by it. The "win or learn" philosophy extends beyond the ring, framing setbacks as growth opportunities.

The employment pathway has proven sustainable: most participants who complete the Wimbledon placement secure subsequent work they likely wouldn't have accessed otherwise. For young people repeatedly told they won't amount to anything, that first rung on the ladder at a globally recognized institution carries weight far beyond a summer paycheck.
