Boyd warns Scotland must step up after narrow Haiti win

Scotland edged Haiti 0-1 in their World Cup opener, John McGinn’s deflected strike delivering the nation’s first victory at a finals in 36 years. Former striker Kris Boyd said the side looked nervous despite being heavy favourites and warned that performance levels must rise for the crucial clash with Morocco. The win lifts Scotland to the top of Group C.

Boyd criticised Clarke’s decision to start two strikers, Lawrence Shankland and Che Adams, noting the partnership failed to create any real threat. He praised centre‑back duo Hanley and Hendry and highlighted Lewis Ferguson’s midfield work, but stressed the team’s nervous passes and slow start. Raising the intensity, Boyd expects a more compact midfield or three‑back shape against the seventh‑ranked opposition.

With Brazil drawing 1-1 with Morocco, a point against the North Africans would virtually guarantee Scotland a place in the Round of 32 under the new format that admits eight third‑placed teams. Boyd insists Clarke will likely revert to a five‑midfield line‑up and keep Ben Gannon‑Doak on the wing, whose work ethic he lauded. Scotland must raise its level to avoid a knockout.
