Katie Boulter failed to build on a promising start, suffering a 3-6 6-2 6-2 defeat to American Ashlyn Krueger in the first round of the Mubadala DC Open. The Brit dominated the opening set, breaking twice to claim it 6-3.

Krueger turned the match around after 16 first-set unforced errors, breaking Boulter twice in the second set. In the decider, Krueger broke three times over five games to seal victory and set up a second-round clash with four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka.

In Mexico, Cameron Norrie ended his six-match losing streak on the ATP Tour with a 6-4 6-1 win over world No 95 Aleksandar Kovacevic at the Mifel Tennis Open. Norrie recovered from an early break, traded breaks in a tight first set, then dominated the second to advance.
