Katie Boulter suffered a straight-set defeat to Belinda Bencic in the first round of the Australian Open. The British player, ranked 113th, entered the main draw as a late replacement but was overwhelmed by the Swiss 10th seed. Boulter lost the first set 6-0 in just 26 minutes and couldn't force a decider despite a stronger second set.

Boulter's struggles continue a difficult period. She dropped outside the top 100 last year, losing her British number one ranking to Emma Raducanu amid injury woes. Seeking a fresh start, she recently ended her long-term coaching partnership and now works with Michael Joyce, who previously guided Maria Sharapova to multiple Grand Slam titles.

The loss is a setback for Boulter's 2026 season goals. She has won only four tour-level matches since Wimbledon and is now ranked Britain's number four. Off the court, she plans to marry Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur later this year, calling it a source of positive motivation regardless of her on-court results.
