Alonso Cautious on Aston Martin's China GP Prospects Despite Honda Confidence

Fernando Alonso remains uncertain about Aston Martin's ability to complete the Chinese Grand Prix despite Honda's optimism following improvements in Australia. The team faced severe challenges in Bahrain where Alonso retired after 21 laps and Lance Stroll missed qualifying entirely due to concerns about permanent nerve damage from car vibrations.

Team principal Adrian Newey revealed that both cars could only complete half the season-opener, with parts shortages being the primary issue. However, Alonso noted progress from Bahrain testing, stating they completed formation laps, starts and pit stops in Australia - basic procedures they couldn't attempt in the opener. Honda's trackside general manager Shintaro Orihara expressed confidence that countermeasures implemented after Bahrain testing would allow the team to cover full race distance in China.

Honda's involvement marks their return as a full engine manufacturer after tremendous success with Red Bull, though only about 30% of the original Honda team currently works with Aston Martin. The team completed the fewest laps in pre-season testing and faces the challenge of being Honda's sole partner, limiting their data collection compared to other teams. With the Chinese Grand Prix marking the first Sprint weekend of the season, Aston Martin's performance will be closely watched as they attempt to overcome their technical difficulties.
