Fernando Alonso has warned Aston Martin that the team must retire from the Australian Grand Prix at the first sign of trouble with its Honda power unit to avoid jeopardizing the 2026 campaign. The Silverstone outfit faces a severe Honda power unit crisis at the Melbourne weekend, plagued by excessive vibrations that have left them without spares. Aston Martin estimates it can only complete 25 laps of the 58-lap race, forcing a cautious approach.

Starting last in 17th (Alonso) and 18th (Stroll), the team's struggles were evident as Stroll failed to set a lap in both FP3 and qualifying due to mechanical faults, while Alonso managed to finish less than a second off a Q2 appearance. Alonso emphasized the need for extreme flexibility, stating, 'We will be flexible every lap, we will monitor the situation. As Adrian [Newey] said yesterday, we are short on parts.' He stressed that compromising the car further risks damage impacting the critical race in China the following week.

Alonso also highlighted the team's morale challenges, acknowledging mechanics working 'day and night' changing power units, and noted that finishing near the back is 'a little bit better than being dead last' for motivation. The Honda power unit remains the team's biggest concern, threatening their 2026 preparations.
