Aston Martin Honda Battery Crisis

Aston Martin faces a critical power unit crisis at the Australian GP as team principal Adrian Newey reveals they have no spare batteries remaining for their Honda powertrains. The team's running has been severely limited, with Lance Stroll managing just three laps in FP1 and Fernando Alonso unable to leave the garage due to persistent battery failures linked to excessive vibrations from the Honda unit.

The battery shortage stems from ongoing vibration issues with Honda's powertrain that have plagued Aston Martin throughout 2026 pre-season. The team stationed personnel at Honda's Sakura facilities to address the problems, but these efforts have yet to yield solutions. Honda restricted low-fuel running to protect the remaining batteries, creating a "self-feeding problem" that limits crucial data collection on the car's performance.

Newey expressed feeling "powerless" amid the situation, acknowledging both the significant power unit challenges and the lack of running that prevents proper evaluation of the chassis. With only two batteries remaining and a high rate of damage, the team finds themselves in what Newey described as a "scary place" for the weekend, though they remain hopeful of getting both cars on the grid despite the mounting obstacles.
