The AIG Women's Open celebrates its 50th anniversary at Royal Lytham & St Annes this week, transformed from a £500 amateur event in 1976 to a $10m major with a $1.5m winner's share. Dame Laura Davies, with 43 consecutive appearances, says it's "unrecognisable" from its early days.

The tournament overcame early struggles — no sponsor until 1979, cancellation in 1983, and sporadic LPGA inclusion — before gaining major status in 2001 and R&A management in 2017. AIG's sponsorship trebled prize money, while links courses like St Andrews and Carnoustie elevated its profile.

Over 50,000 fans are expected, continuing three years of attendance records. Nelly Korda seeks a career Grand Slam, while Haeran Ryu targets a third straight major. British winners Georgia Hall (2018) and Catriona Matthew (2009) set a Royal Lytham precedent, with Charley Hull and Lottie Woad among home hopes.
